On Saturday May 26, over 1,800
Eritreans in the UK gathered at the London Troxy to celebrate the 16th
anniversary of Eritrean‚ Independence. Inside the Troxy Hall, the green, red,
blue and yellow wreath of the Eritrean flag graced the hall.
Eritreans dressed in traditional dress
representing all Eritrean ethnic groups mingled with each other while the hall
buzzed with felicitous atmosphere.
The celebrations kicked of with a
minute memorial silence for Eritrea, fallen heroes.
H.E. Negasi Sengal, Eritrean Ambassador
to the United Kingdom and Ireland, delivered a summary of the speech by
President Isaiss Afeworki on the occasion of the 16th Anniversary of
Eritrean independence.
Following the Ambassador speech, a cake
was cut in honour of Eritrea on her 16th Birthday. Members of the
National Union of Eritrea Women (NUEW) adorned the ceremony with cultural songs
and ululations.
Following, a Band led by Hagos Berhane
and Fetsum Yohannes rocked the place till dawn. Other performers included Osman
Hasen, Omer Senafe, Nighisti Ghebrat, Oqbai Mesfun, as well as “sedet” doing
some
Hip-Hop numbers.
The Events concluded peacefully at 4;
00 in the morning.
