TRADITIONS OF ERITREA: LINKING THE PAST TO THE FUTURE

Tesfa G. Gebremedhin and Gebre H. Tesfagiorgis, Editors[1]

Brief Description of Book

The book covers selected topics of Eritrea’s tradition. The editors have assembled some distinguished Eritrean scholars and professionals, each capable of addressing an aspect of Eritrean tradition from the writer’s particular field of expertise. While the methodology and style of analysis have been left to the best judgment of each contributor to use the best practices prevailing in the respective field, each was asked to provide a cogent analytic description of the tradition in question, exposing its essential elements, and to address the implications of those elements to the long-term development of the country.

The book is intended to serve two related purposes: first, to document and analyze selected traditional legacies and cultural practices in Eritrea, and second, to establish the linkage of those legacies and practices to Eritrea’s current and prospective socio-economic developmental goals. Readers should thus be able to gain a comprehensive picture of how the traditional practices may influence social and economic development in Eritrea. The book is aimed at an interdisciplinary and general audience interested in Eritrea’s tradition and its relevance to development issues and concerns. The book can serve as a reference to policy makers and professionals, and as an educational resource for universities and public libraries. Further, consultants and researchers interested in issues related to sustainable economic development and social progress in Eritrea will find the book to be a good source of relevant information.
