http://ertra.com/Gallery/albums/oakland-2011/DSC_0923.thumb.jpg Like its predecessors this year’s annual three-day Eritrean Festival for Western USA, which took place from Friday, August 12, 2011 through Sunday, August 14th in Oakland, California, was simply remarkable. Attended by several thousand Americans of Eritrean descent and friends the festival was highlighted by sports, seminars, art show and cultural performances. It was quite fascinating to see a number of young and old men and women donned in traditional Eritrean costumes. Among the sports played the soccer and basketball games drew many spectators. It turned out that the teams, which comprised various age groups and both genders, came from as far as Portland and San Bernardino and as near as the host city, Oakland, and neighboring cities. The games were very competitive and the players displayed a high level of discipline. Ambassador Mohammed Suleman, Eritrea’s ambassador to the European Union, was the keynote speaker at Saturday’s seminar. He briefed the gathering on the current situation in Eritrea and the region in general. He reiterated the fact that Eritrea has managed to avert the famine that is currently hitting the Horn of Africa region owing to the extensive and meticulous preparation made by the government coupled with the hard work of its people, thus proving the effectiveness of the government’s policies and its commitment to having food security. The other speakers included Eritrean psychologist Dr. Tesfay Aradom and activist Mrs. Sophia Tesfamariam. Dr. Tesfay spoke about the challenges and opportunities facing us in our adoptive countries especially in regards to maintaining and cherishing our Eritrean traditions and identity whereas Ms. Sophia spoke about the ongoing campaign aimed at annulling and repealing the UNSC sanction against Eritrea. Seattle-based professional Eritrea artist, Yegizaw Michael, had some of his paintings displayed at the festival and you could find him interact with the viewers and answer their queries with humility and passion. A festival without the cultural performance would be incomplete. Seattle had prominence in that department too. The band consisting of Teklit (saxophone), Lucas (bass), Samson (keyboard), Michael (acoustic guitar) and two singers, Rezene and Goiton came from Seattle. Also performing were famous singers, such as Michael (Orange County), Habtom and Binian (Los Angeles), Aron (Las Vegas), Michael (Atlanta). Eritrean female rapper Suzy” Queen Nefertiti” Abraha from Atlanta sang several of her hits. The audience cheered, applauded all the performers and danced all the three nights away. The celebration of Eritrea and its diversity came to a successful end. Many of the participants already and immediately started looking forward to the next festival with the out-of-towners expressing their utmost gratitude and appreciation for the hospitality of Eritrean Americans in the bay area.
