The Eritreans cut the vital road Asmara-Massawa in November 1977 and December of the same year, they attacked the port itself.
Three-fourth of Massawa fell in Eritrean hands. However, savage bombardment from Soviet warships and Soviet supplied fighter planes prevented its total liberation.
