20 June 2004
On Sunday the 20 of June 2004, Eritreans from the tri-state area gathered to remember and celebrate the memory of our fallen heroes, our Martyrs of the 30-year war for independence and the recent border war with Ethiopia. The fading hours of the day allowed for all Eritreans to share the bitterness of the day while realizing those martyrs, we were honoring died protecting our land and its people. To honor the martyrs the local Eritreans listened to the names of the dead, while walking with Eritrean and American flags. The gathering carried candles that served as a concrete reminder of the martyrs sacrifice and eternal presence with all Eritreans.
Mr. Amanuel Georgo, First Secretary of the Permanent Representative of the State of Eritrea started the spoken word portion of the evening for the solemn occasion. Next, in the most emotionally charged portion of the evening, various people from the audience read poems aloud to the gathering of Eritreans. Many people prepared and read their own poems to honor their fallen siblings or children, Throughout the emotional evening and the long days of mourning ahead we must all remember that the martyrs may have passed from the Earth yet they will never pass from our hearts.
